Implant Retained Dentures

Also known as snap on dentures, these are a type of overdenture that, unlike traditional methods, are supported by and attached to implants. This method offers a more secure and comfortable fit, as the dentures snap onto the implants integrated into the jawbone, preventing slipping and enhancing chewing ability.
Removable implant dentures can be used when you need all teeth on the upper or lower arch replaced and are looking for good retention at a more reasonable price. Removable implant dentures eliminate the need for the messy denture adhesives to help keep dentures in place.

How do removable implant dentures work?
You may hear these removable implant dentures also called “Snap-On Dentures”. Some people describe them this way because they snap on to implants that are placed in the bone to aid in the retention and stability of the denture.
Having removable implant dentures placed is a step by step process and can take some time. First, the set of implants (with the male side of the snap) are placed in the bone and will heal and adhere to the surrounding bone over a 3-4 month period. After the implants have fully healed, dentures will be made (with the receiving, or female, part of the snap). These dentures will be made to your specifications and shade that you and your doctor discuss. These dentures can be removed at home for cleaning by the patient and without assistance of your dentist.

Dentures
OVERVIEW
Dentures are custom-crafted dental appliances designed to replace missing teeth and restore the natural appearance and functionality of your smile. They are made to precisely fit your mouth, ensuring comfort and improving your ability to eat and speak easily. Modern dentures are more natural-looking and comfortable than ever before.
Dentures are not a fixed appliance, meaning that they can be taken out of the mouth without the help of a dental professional. These dentures will take the place of any lost teeth, but they will take some time to get used to. A dental professional can make you one of three types of dentures depending on your situation.
What to Expect
If you are getting a full denture, you can expect to receive something that looks very natural and can be customized to your liking.
A denture will fit over the ridge of bone on either arch. The area covering this ridge will be flesh colored and made of an acrylic material. If the denture is for your upper arch, the flesh colored acrylic will cover the whole roof of your mouth versus just the ridge. This will help create a palatal seal. A lower denture will look more like a horseshoe shape and will only cover the ridge leaving ample room for the tongue.
Once the acrylic is made, natural looking teeth in the shade chosen by you and your dentist will be attached to give you a natural looking smile.

How long will it take me to adjust to wearing dentures?
It may take several weeks or several months to adjust to wearing dentures. You will have to practice eating and talking with your new dentures to get used to them and feel back to normal. Dentures may feel loose, “big”, or bulky. If you have these concerns, please talk with your dentist. Wearing a denture may cause some soreness, minor irritation, or cause you to create more saliva. None of these are abnormal, however, if you do experience irritation, please see your dentist so that they can aid in adjusting the dentures.
When will I have to replace my dentures?
Dentures, even permanent dentures, will periodically need to be relined or replaced because of normal wear and tear (typically every 10 years). Your mouth will change and bone will diminish as you age. If your denture becomes loose or starts to irritate your tissue, please see your doctor. Even though you are wearing dentures, you should still see your doctor once a year for an annual check up to evaluate your tissues.
How do I care for my dentures?
- When placing or removing your dentures, make sure you have a towel or cloth to stand over in case they are dropped. Dentures are delicate and can easily break I they are dropped on to a hard surface.
- When you remove them, be sure to place them in water and a cleaning solution that is recommended by your dentist.
- Dentures will still accumulate plaque and food deposits. Be sure to continue to brush them daily with a soft toothbrush as you would with your natural teeth to help keep them from staining. Be sure to use anti-bacterial soap as toothpaste will be abrasive and cause scratching of denture, which can cause denture to harbor more bacteria.
- Continue to brush your tissues to keep them healthy and clean and stimulate circulation.
- If your dentures chip, break, or are loose, call your dentist. Please do not try to repair or adjust them without the help of a dental professional. Doing so will void any warranties on the denture.

What to Expect
After having a dental implant placed, you may experience some swelling, soreness, or discomfort. Bruising of the face and gums may also be present. You doctor may prescribe antibiotics and/or pain medication for the days after the procedure. If swelling persists or gets worse in the days after surgery, please contact our office for further evaluation.
Eating after having an implant placed may differ from your usual diet as well. You will need to eat a soft diet as the sight heals. Times may vary patient to patient, so you will need to consult with your doctor to confirm how long you will need to be on a soft food diet.

Are dental implants right for me?
Not everyone will be a candidate for a dental implant. A candidate for a dental implant may be someone who meets the following criteria:
- One or more teeth are missing or needing to be extracted
- Jawbone has reached full growth (usually 18 or older)
- Jawbone is the appropriate size or density to hold an implant
- Must have healthy tissue (hard and soft)
- No underlying health conditions that affect bone structure or density
- If extracting all remaining teeth, must be able and willing to wear dentures
- Must be willing to complete the process that will take several months
- Non-smoker or be able to stop smoking (Smoking will affect the ability for the implant to heal correctly and be successful)
What risks are involved?
As with any medical or dental procedure there are some risks. Though these problems or complications are rare, most are minor and treated easily. Some of the risks may include but are not limited to the following:
- Implant site may get infected if post-operative instructions are not followed by the patient
- Other structures around the implant site, such as blood vessels or surrounding teeth may be damaged
- Pain, numbness, and nerve damage are possible in the chin, gum, or lip areas around the area in which the implant is placed
- In the upper jaw, sinus problems are possible depending on the proximity of the sinus to the implant
Is it possible for the implants to fail?
Although most implant placement are successful and uneventful, there is a possibility that the implant may fail. This can happen for multiple reasons, some of which are out of anyone’s control. To help your implant be successful, you will need to follow all post-operative procedures given by your doctor and his staff. These will include but are not limited to the following:
- Practicing good oral hygiene
- Avoiding tobacco use
- Seeing your dentist regularly
- Avoid any habits that would damage natural teeth (chewing ice or other hard objects)
